This is one of the most unusual groups of boxes that we have had. For one thing we have a King in residence here. That's a first for us! And for another we have three boxes, all in the same design but completely different in shapes and although I normally would place them in "Once is Not Enough" something about the design tells me that they should be near Louis XIV. There is a strong feeling of Sun King to these boxes and he was, after all, The Sun King. So without further ado here he is!

QQ. His Majesty Louis XIV. The Sun King Box.
I don't know if you have ever seen any paintings of this gentleman but I have, many times, and I have to say that this box looks just like him. It is an incredible likeness, even to the way he is sitting with his ankles crossed and the way he holds himself, exactly like pictures of him that I have seen. It is marvelously well done! The Throne Chair on which he sits is a period piece and on the back it is "embroidered" with his Sun King insignia and a fleur de lis in each of the four corners of the chair. He is wearing knee britches, his shoes have the large ribbon bow ties that were then so fashionable for men. His coat is "embroidered" in gold, his shirt has a jabot, (ruffled tie) at the throat and his sleeves have deep ruffles extending past the jacket sleeve, exactly as they used to wear their clothes. His hands are perfect with very long aristocratic fingers and his face has that supercilious expression that he always wore. Every picture of him that I have ever seen had this same facial expression. Haughty, is the word. The other thing that is noteworthy about this box is that ONLY 3 HAVE BEEN MADE. Talk about a limited edition? The maker is keeping one, I am keeping one for myself so that leaves 1 to be sold and that's it. Our price: $249.90. NEW and Fabulous! See below for an interesting sidelight on His Majesty.

The Sun King Boxes. Spectacular pieces with a very intricate design. They can't really be described because the design has dots, balls, garlands, pin striping of various widths, flowers and all together sounds overdone but it is not. It is strikingly beautiful and the coloring is typical of the period!

About Louis XIV: He visited Chenonceaux in the Loire Valley frequently enough to have had a reception room there named after him and decorated in the royal manner. In this room there is a large painting of him which we have photographed so that you may see how very like him is our box above. In the photograph notice the King and Queen's chairs in front of the fireplace. Notice how small they look, but in fact, they are quite large, considerably larger than the average chair. (The fireplace opening in the room you see below is easily 4 feet high.).) That will give you some sense of the ceiling height in that room and the room size. If you are interested in seeing a box replica of Chenonceaux: go to Wonderful World Item "A".
