Artoria's Fabergé
Imperial Easter Egg Box
by arrangement with The Forbes Collection
This is the first of
the numerous eggs that the House of Fabergé made for the Czar of
all The Russias, Alexander III, to give to his wife as her "Easter
Surprise" in 1885. It was the first of many, for Maria Feodorovna,
the Czarina, loved it, and wrote to her many friends and family
about it displaying it prominently for all to see. The original
was made of white enamel with a gold interior and a gold yolk that
opened to reveal a gold hen with ruby eyes resting on a bed of gold
straw. The hen opened as well and inside was a replica of the imperial
crown from which dangled yet another miniature ruby egg. There were
four shades of colored gold used.
Our Imperial Egg is
made of a pure white Limoges porcelain exterior and a gold washed
interior; with gold washed metal fittings and tiny shell shaped
feet so the egg may stand to be displayed. The yolk is also a hinged
box, matte gold on the outside and brilliant finish gold in the
interior and the tiny hen is dull gold, and our egg also displays
four shades of colored gold. There is one major difference between
the eggs, and I am not here referring to the obvious difference
of the original egg being made from a precious metal set with gems:
our yolk is not meant to be displayed inside the larger egg box.
It is meant to lay alongside with the tiny hen sitting next to it.
It cannot be placed in the larger egg because the larger egg cannot
close with the yolk portion inside of it.
The large egg is 3
inches high. The yolk is 2 1/4 inches high. The hen is 1 1/4" wide
by 3/4" high. Retail: Upwards of $177.00. Our price: $159.90.
An heirloom to be.
