The Art of Fabergé

Forbes Fabergé Collection by Artoria 2

The third piece in Artoria's effort to reproduce pieces of The Forbes Collection of Fabergé is this exquisite box given by Czarina Alexandra Feodorovna to Czar Nicholas II in the same year as he gave her The Imperial Coronation Egg, (found on the previous page). Boxes, then as now and as in years previous, were given because the perfect enclosure of space was something that intrigued, and that has ever been the case. As well, there has always been a satisfaction in snapping something shut with a definite and precise click as a well made box closes.*

The original box was enameled. Fabergé, as you recall, was famous for the perfection of his enameling technique, guilloché. No one has ever surpassed or even equaled the quality of his enameled creations. The entire ground was gold-colored enamel with a gold trellis-work design on top. Within each diamond-shaped section was a black enamel imperial eagle set with a center diamond.

Our box is reproduced in porcelain with the guilloché effect reproduced in bas relief. Each diamond shaped trellis area is accented by crystals at the four points, crystals in the center of the eagle and crystals circling the monogram which is the centerpiece of the box. The monogram itself is in relief and beaded to give the appearance of diamonds that stud the actual box. Inside is a Russian imperial eagle insignia, painted, with a crystal centered on it. The clasp is the same imperial eagle. Retail: About $550.00. Our price: $494.90. This is a limited edition of 1000. The box shown is #9.

* Some years ago I read a study on automobile design that spoke of this in regard to car doors and the way they sound when slammed shut. The sound equated with the quality of the car. Also, the sound of turn signals in automobiles: it is not a necessity to have them click the way they do but when they made them without that sound it was discovered that the public wanted that satisfying click as they snapped off. When you are driving notice the satisfaction you get every time the turn signal clicks off. I notice it all of the time and smile to myself at the truth of the study. Notice the feeling of "a job efficiently done" that you get each time your turn signal clicks off.
